1. The design is clear, but the measurements are not
A garment can look obvious visually while still being technically ambiguous. A fashion sketch might show an oversized T-shirt, for example, but "oversized" is not a measurable specification.
- How oversized?
- Where should the shoulder sit?
- What should the chest measurement be?
- How long should the body be?
- How wide should the sleeve opening be?
Your tech pack should translate the visual concept into measurable specifications. This normally includes a detailed measurement chart covering the relevant points of measure (POMs), along with tolerances where appropriate.
The more important the measurement, the less you should leave it open to interpretation.
2. There is no clear point of measure diagram
A measurement chart is much more useful when the factory can clearly see where each measurement is taken. For example, "chest width" can mean different things depending on how the measurement is defined.
A professional tech pack should show the measurement points visually and label them consistently. This is particularly important when working with overseas manufacturers or factories that are developing many different styles simultaneously.
Your goal is not simply to provide measurements. Your goal is to eliminate ambiguity.

3. Fabric information is too generic
"100% cotton" is not a complete fabric specification. Two 100% cotton fabrics can have completely different weights, constructions, finishes, shrinkage characteristics and hand feels.
For a garment manufacturer, details such as fabric composition, fabric weight/GSM, construction, finish, stretch percentage, colour and shrinkage requirements can have a significant impact on the finished garment.
For example, a heavyweight cotton jersey and a lightweight cotton jersey may both technically satisfy "100% cotton", but they will produce very different garments. If fabric performance is important to your design, your tech pack needs to communicate that.
4. Artwork is included without production specifications
Adding a logo to a garment is not necessarily enough. Your factory may need to know:
- Exact artwork dimensions
- Placement measurements
- Print or embroidery method
- Thread or ink colours
- Number of colours
- Print area
- Artwork orientation
- Required artwork files
A graphic that looks correctly positioned on a mock-up can still be wrong by several centimetres on the physical garment. Artwork specifications should therefore be treated as technical information rather than simply visual decoration.
5. Colour references are not specific enough
"Black", "cream", "dark green" or "vintage blue" might make sense creatively. They are not always precise enough for production.
Where colour accuracy matters, provide an appropriate industry colour reference such as a Pantone code, alongside any relevant physical or digital colour references. This becomes particularly important when a brand is developing a repeatable colour palette across multiple collections.
Your factory should not have to guess what "off-white" means.
6. Construction details are missing
Two garments can have identical measurements and still look completely different because they are constructed differently. Details such as seam type, stitch type, stitch density, seam allowance, hem construction, rib specifications, pocket construction, reinforcement and topstitching can all affect the final appearance and performance of the garment.
If a particular construction detail is important to the design, document it. A good tech pack does not just explain what the garment looks like. It explains how the garment needs to be made.
7. Trims and components are not fully specified
Zips, buttons, labels, drawcords, eyelets and other trims can be small components, but they can have a large effect on the finished product. For example, a hoodie tech pack might specify a drawcord without explaining cord material, cord diameter, colour, length, aglet type or exit position. That leaves several decisions for the manufacturer to make.
The same principle applies to labels, buttons, snaps, zips and other components. If the component is visible or functionally important, it deserves a clear specification.

8. The tech pack does not show garment construction from multiple views
One front image is rarely enough. Depending on the garment, your technical drawings may need to show front, back, side, inside and close-up construction details.
The back of a garment can contain just as many important details as the front. A back neck label, seam, yoke, pleat, pocket or embroidery placement can easily be missed if it is not documented. Technical flats should make the garment's construction understandable without relying on a conversation or assumption.
9. There is no version control
This problem becomes increasingly important as a garment moves through development. You make a change. The factory makes another change. A measurement is updated. The artwork is replaced. The sample is revised. Suddenly there are multiple versions of the same document circulating.
Without version control, it becomes difficult to know which specification is current. A professional tech pack should clearly identify its version or revision status and document important changes.

10. The tech pack does not explain what is non-negotiable

- Critical artwork requirement: Logo placement must remain centred to chest.
- Critical fabric requirement: Fabric must meet specified GSM and composition.

The manufacturer needs to understand:
- What are we making?

- How should it be constructed?
- What measurements should it meet?
- Where should every component be positioned?
- What should the finished garment look and feel like?
The better those questions are answered, the less the factory has to interpret. And fewer assumptions generally mean fewer surprises during sampling.
Does a better tech pack guarantee a perfect first sample?
No. Garment development is iterative.
Even with an excellent tech pack, the first prototype may reveal issues with fit, fabric behaviour, construction or proportions that were not obvious on paper. The purpose of a good tech pack is not to eliminate the sampling process. It is to make the sampling process more controlled.
Instead of trying to explain why the sample is wrong from scratch, you can identify which specification needs to change and communicate the revision clearly. That makes each sample more useful.
When should you create a tech pack?
Ideally, the technical documentation should be developed before sending a garment into formal sampling. Your design can begin as a sketch or concept. It can then evolve into a technical flat, specification sheet and complete tech pack before being sent to your manufacturer.
This creates a much clearer development process: Concept → Technical Design → Tech Pack → Prototype → Fit Review → Revision → Production.
